Brady Williams and Ryan Carpenter discuss returning home with a win

The Bowling Green Hot Rods picked up a big win in it’s return home from a 2-7 road trip. BG got a pair of two-out RBI hits and strong pitching from Ryan Carpenter, who went the first six innings, Jason McEachern and Charlie Cononie. The Hot Rods are now 5-0 against Lake County this season.

Here are post game comments from manager Brady Williams and Carpenter.

Williams
“I think (Friday’s extra-inning loss at South Bend) kind of ran into this one. We played very well (Friday). We just didn’t get the win. Sometimes that happens. Today we played just as good as (Friday), we just had those two-out RBIs and our pitchers did a tremendous job.”

On Carpenter’s six shutout innings
“He’s been pitching well. The one thing I like about him is his tempo. He gets after it out there. He goes after hitters. His change-up has been really effective here lately. That’s making his fastball look better. He’s doing a nice job of keeping us in games and giving us a chance to win.”

On Josh Sale’s debut, 1-or-2 with a walk and a run scored
“He had a couple of good at-bats tonight. It was good to see him contribute right away.”

On getting out of a two on, no out jam in the seventh – turning a sac bunt into a double play and ending the inning with a McEachern pickoff
“The old 2-5-3 double
play. You see those every day. That was a tremendous play. I’m just glad they executed the fundamentals on that play and then the quick pick at second, picking the guy off, that is another big play. We work on that and hope that they do it.”

Carpenter
“This was good. We wanted to get back on the right track. We didn’t have the best of road trips. We wanted to come out here and get some wins and get going in the right direction.”

on his performance
“One of my things has been to work quick, get the hitters off balance. Tonight I incorporated a cutter which I haven’t thrown any this year. It worked well for me and the change-up was working well.

on working a fast game with the other starter also in a groove.
“As weird as it sounds it is always nice when the other guy is in a rhythm too, because quick innings you can get out there and stay at your own pace.”
