The Bowling Green Hot Rods got back on the winning track with a 4-2 win over Burlington (Iowa) on Thursday at Bowling Green Ballpark.
Tommy Coyle had three hits, finishing a double shy of the cycle, while Dylan Floro improved to 2-0 with five solid innings of work.
Here are post game comments from Floro and manager Jared Sandberg.
“I thought it was a good game. Burlington is a better team than their record shows. Our offense stayed at it. I thought (starting pitcher Dylan Floro) pitched well. He didn’t like his command, but I thought he was very effective. He was down in the zone with his sinker like he should of been. (Marcus Jensen and Matt Ramsey) pitched well out of the bullpen again. It seems to be a reoccurring them now, so we are starting to pick up some steam in the bullpen. It was just a great game overall.”
timely hitting in the two run fifth
“I think that starts with (Marty) Gantt getting the leadoff double and (Ryan Dunn) moving him over to set up (Leonardo) Reginatto’s RBI base hit. There were some big runs there.”
on the relay play in the eighth, throwing a runner out at the plate
“We just worked on relays yesterday. We worked on the exact play. I hit fungos off the Dr. Pepper sign and the outfielders went over and picked it up and threw the relay to the infielders who threw it home. That’s exactly how it worked out tonight. It definitely turned out to be a big play, especially because there was nobody out.”
on Coyle’s three hit night
“He had a great game. I think any time you can put somebody on base in front of a guy swinging the bat like Toles is, it’s key. With (Tyler) Goeddel being out tonight, I don’t think he had any problem stepping in. He made a slight adjustment with his stride about three days ago and he’s had some success.”
on the six man rotation
“We are trying to save some innings in the end. They are young and limited. Some of them are pitching for the first time in a full season. There is a certain amount of innings that need to be pitched over the course of a year. Again these are some arms and they are the future of the Tampa Bay Rays, so we are definitely trying to protect them. The success they are having is showing they are the future.”
“It also allows the bullpen to go out and pitch multiple innings and get their work in and develop as well. With no set rules in the bullpen, everybody is going to pitch and get an extended role. I think the way everything is shaping up, everybody is accepting the ball when they get it and doing their job.”
“It went good. The team got the W which is the main thing. My slider was a little off tonight. Mt fast ball was all right and my change-up really helped me a lot tonight. It got me a lot of my outs. The most important thing was the win – give us five strong innings and pass the ball to the next guy.”
on the six man rotation
“It’s actually good because in college it was a seven day rest. Now we go from five days to six days, which helps us out a bit. It’s nice.”
